Artistic Metamorphosis: Unlocking the Worlds of Sophia Zhong

Artistic Metamorphosis: Unlocking the Worlds of Sophia Zhong Artistic Metamorphosis: Unlocking the Worlds of Sophia Zhong June 12, 2026 – July 12, 2026 Opening Reception: June 12, 2026, 17:00–19:00 Venue: AOMO Gallery Curator: Ruowei Chen, Yanbei “I found I could say things with color and shapes that I couldn’t say any other way – things I had no words for.”                                                                – Georgia O’Keeffe “Artistic Metamorphosis” marks a vital milestone in the creative trajectory of Sophia Zhong. Staged at the threshold of her high school graduation, as this solo retrospective is far more than a visual chronicle of coming-of-age; it is a celebration and exploration of Sophia’s continued artistic evolution as a “world observer”, “world builder”, injecting her love and joy found in the craft into her artworks. The exhibition is woven around the core thread of transformation, mapping her growth across three conceptual dimensions. The viewer is guided through a time machine-like journey; through Sophia’s artworks from initial inspirations of childhood toys, games and Chinese tales documented by whimsical pencil sketches to intricate etchings and paintings in Area A, the sense of playfulness continuously bleeding into the dense composition of her exciting, self-constructed worlds filled with lively character interactions and comedic situations in Area B, this retrospective of which concludes in Area C, a display of Sophia’s interaction with the wider artistic world, from multimedia experimentation to collaborations with others, such as surrealist master Cruzeiro Seixas, across her artistic journey. By translating private childhood memories and everyday observations into a universal, shared artistic language, “Artistic Metamorphosis” proves Sophia’s resilience, conceptual rigor, and visionary capacity as an emerging artist. It is a heartfelt look back at where she came from, and a brilliant starting block for her leap into the future art world.

Ma Haiquan: Urban Images

Ma Haiquan: Urban Images Ma Haiquan: Urban Images April 11, 2025 – May 10, 2025 Opening Reception: April 11, 2025, 17:30–19:30 Venue: AOMO Gallery Curator: Yanbei Step into the visual meditations of Lisbon-based photographer Ma Haiquan. Through poetic compositions of light and shadow, the artist captures the fleeting silhouettes of subway passengers, solitary figures at street corners, and the delicate balance between motion and stillness. Born in Beijing and residing in Lisbon since 2015, Ma Haiquan’s work transcends geographical boundaries. Blurred commuters in transit engage in silent dialogue with crystalline stillness, reflecting the migrant experience of navigating cultural thresholds. As restrained Eastern composition meets the lyrical expression of Western urban landscapes, these images embody AOMO Gallery’s core philosophy: Art Without Borders. Through his photography, Ma Haiquan examines how displacement reshapes visual storytelling, encouraging young audiences to reinterpret identity through experimental imagery.

AO-MO Gallery: Where Tradition Meets Modernity

AO-MO Gallery: Where Tradition Meets Modernity Lisbon-based artist Yanbei explores an artistic space between calligraphy and topography with his use of bold, repetitive contour lines laid over subtle washes of inviting colours. Recalling the traditions of calligraphy and ink scroll paintings, both practices central to Chines history. Yanbei thus uses his art to recall his cultural past while carrying it forward into the realm of the elegantly abstract. Collections like his “Fingerprint” series showcase this blend with its pairing of precise repetition and spiritual mysticism.
